Civil War letters to Lucy Grattan Shelton [manuscript] 1862-1864.

Letters to Lucy Shelton (later Mrs. Henry P.R. McCoy ) were written by her cousin James W. Beaty. The collection also contains one letter from (her future brother-in-law?) Charles Daniel McCoy to his mother. Letters discuss the Bill for Raising Virginia's Quota and its effect on re-enlistment, religious readings and sentiments, rebellious servants influenced by Yankee nurses, hardships, depredations by Union troops, the bombardment of Fredericksburg, assignment to staff of Major A. H. McLaws, trenches near Petersburg. Of interest is a discussion of the miscalculation made by Jefferson Davis in replacing Johnston with Hood and the prediction that the latter would not be able to stop Sherman.
